Vridsløselille

The gate "Porten" in Albertslund is the entrance to a new cultural powerhouse in the middle of the former Vridsløselille State Prison. Here, history, music and city life come together in a community that is growing day by day, while a brand new green district is taking shape behind the walls.

The gate "Porten" in Albertslund is the new public face of the historic Vridsløselille State Prison, which opened in 1859 and became nationally known as ‘Egon Olsen's prison’ from the Olsen Gang films. Today, the area is being transformed into a green neighbourhood with culture, urban life and community at its heart. Porten serves as a temporary and growing centre for activities while the Vridsløse neighbourhood is being built around the iconic walls.

As a visitor, you can already experience guided tours of the heritage-listed buildings and events ranging from rock and art to storytelling, a brewery, market days and pop-up restaurants. The official website brings together a calendar and practical information so you can plan your visit.

The historical narrative is active: the museum about the State Prison in Vridsløselille has reopened in new premises in the eastern residential building, making it easy to combine the cultural programme with an immersion in the site's past.

Going forward, the music profile will also be significantly strengthened. Albertslund Municipality's concert venue Forbrændingen has entered into a partnership that will bring up to 25 concerts a year to Porten, primarily indoors in the old prison buildings. This is a strong signal that the area is not only being preserved, but reinvented as a cultural magnet in Greater Copenhagen.

For international visitors, Porten is unique in its blend of raw prison architecture, vibrant culture and local entrepreneurial spirit, all just 20-30 minutes from central Copenhagen by S-train to Albertslund and a short walk to the area. With the first homes set to be ready for occupancy around the end of 2026, the energy and offerings are expected to gain further momentum, so each season brings new reasons to visit. Keep an eye on Porten's own ‘What's on’ page for current dates.
