Christianshavn's Ferry Café

Classic Danish food and home-made schnapps on the waterfront of Copenhagen’s old, maritime Christianshavn neighbourhood.

The ambition at the more than 150 year old ferry café of Christianshavn is to establish a restaurant that serves classic Danish food - the dishes you know with top quality ingredients and served in historic surroundings. The cozy, neighbourhood restaurant has kept the old, rustic style with a maritime ambience, timber framing and crooked floors, so that you will almost feel like being on an old ferry. You can also eat onboard the newly established boat at the dock right next to the restaurant to get that real rocking boat-feeling.

The Danish classics like smørrebrød (open faced sandwiches) are similar to how tradition describes them, but the kitchen are focusing on elevating and adjusting them to keep up with the 21st century. An example of this is their signature curry herrings with ginger, shallot cream and crispy apples. All fish and meat dishes are plated on wooden boards like the classic wienerschnitzel, and you might get a hammer for your shellfish.

Apart from Danish food, the ferry café also makes their own schnapps from scratch. The owner and chef Erik Frandsen calls himself a schnapps enthusiast and has up to 30 of his own, home-made schnapps on the menu. The restaurant´s most popular ones are the versions with tarragon, fennel and ginger called "Christianshavnerurten" or "Bittermatrosen" with liqourice and juniper berries.
