Christiania is a vibrant free space in central Copenhagen: A green oasis where tranquillity meets creative energy. It’s a strong, diverse community where homemade architecture, culture, nature, poetry, and everyday life coexist.

Since its founding in the early 1970s, Christiania has existed as a unique free town and an alternative community in the heart of Copenhagen. What started as a social experiment during the summer has developed into a living fristad built on values such as community, creativity and freedom.

Over the years, Christiania has often been associated with Pusher Street, but this is only a small part of its story. Today, the free town is undergoing change and development, with a stronger focus on sustainability, culture and shared responsibility. Christiania is a green oasis filled with art, music and everyday life, where diversity and new ideas continue to flourish. Colourful, free and different, Christiania remains a place that looks forward and offers visitors something inspiring and unexpected.

Guidelines for your visit to Christiania

  • Show respect for residents, community and nature – Christiania is a home, not just a place to visit. Please refrain from peeping into people's windows.
  • Walk slowly, enjoy the peace and quiet, and make room for diversity.
  • Follow signs and instructions – they are there for everyone's safety.
  • Be considerate when taking photographs and respect areas where photography is prohibited.
  • Keep the area clean – use bins and take care of green areas.
