Frederiksborg - a unique Renaissance castle in Scandinavia
Picturesquely located in the centre of the castle lake in Hillerød lies Frederiksborg Castle, the largest in Scandinavia.
This unique Renaissance castle was built by Christian IV in the first decade of the 17th century, as a testimony to the king’s position as a powerful North European monarch. The lavish castle is rich in detail and impressive handiwork, and a visit offers a fine opportunity to experience the pomp and circumstance of earlier times.
The National History Museum – 500 years of Danish history
The Museum of National History is housed in Frederiksborg Castle. Through historical paintings, portraits, furniture, and applied art from various periods the museum tells 500 years of Danish history. On a tour through the many beautiful halls of the castle, you encounter kings and queens, noblemen and commoners, events and epochs that contributed to the development and history of Denmark. With changing special exhibitions, Danish and international, guided tours on Sundays, and family activities during school holidays, the museum puts the history of Denmark into perspective and keeps the dialogue with the past going.
The National History Museum was founded in 1878 on the initiative of the founder of Carlsberg, brewer J. C. Jacobsen, after a devastating fire in 1859. The museum is still run as part of the Carlsberg Foundation.
The Knights’ Hall
The Knights’ Hall is a magnificent room where you can easily imagine the royal parties of earlier times. The lavishly carved wooden ceiling is impressively rich in detail, and the walls are decorated with large tapestries and portraits of sovereigns, including a recent painting of 3 generations; Queen Margrethe, Crown Prince Fredrik, and Prince Christian.
The Audience Hall
In the audience hall high and low, rich and poor have been allowed audience with the king since the 1680s. The hall has an authentic baroque interior from the time of Christian IV, an artistic tribute to the absolute monarch. The audience hall reopened in May 2016 after a thorough restoration and today appears in its full glory.
The Castle Chapel
In the stately castle chapel, the absolute monarchs were anointed. Nowadays ordinary citizens also have access to services and concerts in the historical interior. From the upper storey, the gallery, where coats of arms for knights of The Order of the Elephant, and big crosses of The Order of the Dannebrog are added regularly, there is a breathtaking view of the chapel interior. The Portrait Collection
The modern collection on the 3rd floor shows portraits, history paintings, and furniture from the 20th and 21st century. Thus the tale of the history of Denmark is brought all the way up to the present. The rooms are simple and form a contemporary background to the art of the modern portrait.
The Children’s History of Denmark
In Christian IV’s old wine cellar the children have their own world. Here is the exhibition “Christian IV – child and king” featuring exciting modern history paintings, and here you can try on children sized princess gowns and knights’ costumes, or you can write with a quill and ink and participate in fun activities.
