In 1960, the legendary Danish architect Arne Jacobsen designed the entire ‘Royal Hotel’, today known as Radisson Blu Royal Hotel. By building on the heritage, reviving some of Arne Jacobsen’s less known design classics and include new design elements, the world-famous icon is now being modernized for the future.

“We are extremely proud of our heritage and a unique appreciation for design defines everything we do. The renovation is inspired by Arne Jacobsen’s way of approaching design, with the perfect combination of functionality and sophistication. We aim to recreate a world-class design-led guest experience that is every bit as iconic as the original”, says Tom Flanagan, Area Vice President Nordics of the Rezidor Hotel Group.

A hand-picked team of award-winning Danish designers and international architects and project leaders are orchestrating the renewal which includes all 260 guest rooms, lobby, restaurants and bars, and the entire meeting and event space.

“Our aim is to revive the iconic atmosphere of Arne Jacobsen’s design by carefully protecting the legacy whilst at the same time modernizing to meet the guests’ expectations”, explains Brian Gleeson, General Manager at Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, Copenhagen.

Gleeson underlines his teams’ everlasting focus on providing world-class service simply as their way of life.

“We aim to be different by design and create a guest experience where every moment matters. Our passionate and confident team is the beating heart of the hotel and they leave no thought unexpressed and no detail unconsidered. We want our guests to feel an exceptional sense of arrival and a true sense of belonging to this iconic landmark”, explains Gleeson.

Where important decisions are made

The extensive renovation of Radisson Blu Royal Hotel is well underway and already now the top modern meeting and events space, with 10 conference rooms, including 5 executive boardroom suites, are welcoming the first guests.

“We want our guests to have successful meetings and we do all we can to help them create outstanding ideas and make important decisions right here in the heart of Copenhagen. We do that by providing bespoke design details and world-class service in all elements of the meeting experience”, says Gleeson.

All meeting rooms are named after Arne Jacobsen’s design classics, such as the world-famous the ‘Egg’ chair, designed especially for this hotel back in 1960. The art on the walls were found in the archives of the hotel and has been reframed to let the world relive the legacy of Arne Jacobsen.

“In the meeting rooms, we also have bespoke Swan Chairs; one of Jacobsen’s most famous art pieces. The height of the chairs has been raised to enhance the guest comfort to match the slightly elevated boardroom tables”, explains Gleeson.

In addition to the original marble walls, all boardroom suites come with ‘Nero Marquina’ marble credenzas, chosen to pay tribute to Arne Jacobsen’s design as he used this marble in several parts of the hotel.

“Reviving original sophistication with a modern twist, our meeting and events space are completed with stunning views of the Tivoli Gardens and the busy Copenhagen city center. This is ideal for meetings, conferences and private events such as weddings and glamorous cocktail parties”, says Brian Gleeson.

The hotel is the destination

The Royal Hotel, today known as Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, was a forerunner in many ways when it opened in 1960. It was Denmark’s first skyscraper and is recognized as the world’s first designer hotel and the only hotel designed by the world-famous architect Arne Jacobsen. It was also The Rezidor Hotel Group’s first hotel in the world. Today, the multi award-winning hotel group is one of the fastest growing hotel companies in the world and has more than 480 hotels and resorts across Europe, the Middle East & Africa.

One room will remain untouched throughout the renovation; the iconic Room 606 on the sixth floor. That is one of the world’s most famous hotel rooms and it is kept exactly as it was designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1960.

“Room 606 is a living proof of our heritage and is open for anyone who would like to experience Arne Jacobsen’s heritage and immerse themselves in Danish modernism. By interpreting our iconic heritage, we aim to recreate this legendary building and escalate it to new heights for the future”, says Gleeson.

To limit disturbance to guests, the modernization of the hotel will be implemented in steps, letting the guests continue to enjoy the iconic hotel throughout the process. The renovation of the entire hotel will be finalized summer 2018.
