Restaurant chain Madklubben's third restaurant at Sortedam Dossering lakeside in the Nørrebro area of Copenhagen serves the regional cuisine and jazzy soul tunes from the American South.
Although the restaurant's name is Alabama Social, the food is inspired by several of the Southern American states. However, "soul food" is the hallmark especially of the cuisine in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama.
Here the créole and cajun kitchen is in focus, and the food is characterised by an incredible amount of taste and juice. It is a mix of the American food you probably already know, with tender steaks and plenty of deep fried dishes, and the French Caribbean cuisine, which is less known in Denmark, where seafood, chili and the creole herb okra plays a big role.
"Gumbo" is a specialty, Alabama Social is going to pay special attention to on the menu. It is a kind of stew, which is found in many different, delicious versions where one of the main ingredients is precisely this traditional herb.
Nørrebro meets the American South
Decoration wise, the restaurant attempts to unite the unpretentious and raw style of Copenhagen's Nørrebro area with a classic gentlemen's club in the 1940s South, where the French decadence and the jazz-oriented music industry dominated.
The lighting is warm, dark and cozy, while the furniture is bits and pieces found at vintage markets in Denmark and abroad.
