The new artwork by Jeppe Hein challenges the audience at the Cisterns - an unusual, underground exhibition space worth a visit
This year's exhibition by the internationally renowned artist Jeppe Hein fills each of the 4320 square metre. It invites the audience on an inner and outer journey through the underground labyrinthic colonnades of the Cisterns. You have to confront and pass the darkness before you are able to see the light, which he understates with his most extensive exhibition in Copenhagen so far: IN IS THE ONLY WAY OUT from April 15th to November 30th 2018.
The Cisterns are the former water reservoir beneath the green grass of Søndermarken park across from Frederiksberg Castle, and it is the perfect place for Jeppe Hein to challenge, surprise and make the audience lose their orientation - and maybe regain it again along the way. The cold and moist climate of the Cisterns makes sure that the audience are present and sharpens their senses. Jeppe Hein shows the necessity of confronting and overcoming the darkness to be able to experience the light because IN IS THE ONLY WAY OUT.
Jeppe Hein is especially known for his interactive and playful art installations and sculptures from all over the world like his mirror labyrinths, water pavilions and his series of Modified Social Benches that challenge our way of being together in the public space. A characteristic of his artwork is that the audience is always invited to participate.
