The Little Mermaid, Tivoli, Strøget and Christiania have for several years been among Copenhagen’s most visited tourist attractions. But from next year a new, unusual building, situated close to Kastrup Havn in Copenhagen, will join this group of popular attractions.

The Blue Planet is the name of Denmark’s new aquarium, which besides the huge amount of exotic fish and plants, will be a modern aquarium with an outstanding architecture, designed by Danish architects from 3XN.  The building of the aquarium is inspired by the shape of endless motion and shaped as a great whirlpool and it will be seen by everyone who comes to the country by land, water or air.

There has already been a huge interest in the new aquarium, which was demonstrated during an open house event back in May, where 2.500 people showed up.

Facts about The Blue Planet:

  • The largest aquarium will hold 7 million liters of water
  • The largest fish in The Blue Planet will be hammerheads, who can become up to 3-4 meters long.
  • The majority of the animals will be transported to Denmark from most of the world – most of the animals come from Asia.
  • Around 20.000 animals and 450 species can be seen in 53 different aquariums and animal facilities.
  • The size of the building will be around 10.000 m2. In addition to this there will be an outdoor area of 5.000 m2.
