Transport in North Sealand

If you are traveling north of Copenhagen, farther than Hillerød, with public transportation, you have to take a regional train. North Sealand is rich in nature and filled with history and culture and is well worth a visit.

DSB’s S-trains and Kystbane trains will take you to Hillerød and Elsinore, but if you want to venture further out in the region you will have to take one of the five regional train routes.

Frederiksværkbanen runs between Hillerød and Hundested through Frederiksværk. Hornbækbanen runs between Elsinore and Gilleleje, through Hornbæk. Lille Nordbanen runs between Hillerød and Elsinore, through Fredensborg. Gribskovbanen runs between Hillerød and Tisvildeleje, and Nærumbanen runs between Nærum and Jægersborg.

Copenhagen Central Station is located in the heart of the city, bordering to the rough but also trendy Vesterbro. It is a gateway to all public transportation in and out and around Copenhagen. Here you will find buses, taxis, local S-trains as well as regional trains which will take you to North Sealand, other areas of Denmark, Sweden and most of Europe - and the airport.

Copenhagen's characteristic red S-trains will take you to, from and around Copenhagen and most of North Sealand all day every day and also all night after Friday and Saturday.

Bring your bike, baby trolley and dog if you like.

If you are heading northward to Elsinore or in that direction, you can take Kystbanen - the coastal train route. The train runs between Elsinore via Copenhagen city centre to Copenhagen Airport. And why not take a day trip to Swedish Malmö? It only takes 35 minutes on the train across the Øresund Bridge (NB! Not free with Copenhagen Card).

North Sealand is well worth a visit with its beautiful sandy beaches, green forests, interesting museums and child-friendly summer towns. While the DSB and Kystbanen trains will get you to Hillerød and Elsinore, you will need to travel on the local trains, if you want to go further into the region.

Movia is the bus company operating in Copenhagen and much of North Sealand too. The bus network will get you anywhere almost anytime. Choose between yellow daytime buses, CityCirkel sightseeing buses, night buses and harbour buses. One ticket fits all.
