The Copenhagen Opera House is one of the world's most modern opera houses. Several hundred square meters of 24 carat gold leaf covers the ceiling and the walls and balconies are clad in shining maple wood.
The house was designed by Henning Larsen, one of Denmark's most respected architects, and works by some of the best artists in the country have been chosen to decorate the interior. The Opera was inaugurated in January 2005 and is definitely worth a visit.
View to Amalienborg Palace and the Marble Church
From the top floor of the Opera there is a breathtaking view overlooking Copenhagen, and accross the harbour in a straight line you see the Amaliehaven fountain and park, the Amalienborg Palace and in the background the dome of the Marble Church.
Two stages in the Opera House
The Opera House can measure up to some of the most sophisticated in the world. There are two stages: 'The main stage' is, naturally, the largest and for the big performances while 'Takkelloftet' is smaller and for experimental performances. Two out of three operas are performed in the Opera House and about a third of the Royal Theatre's ballet performances. Baroque- and Mozart operas are still performed at the Old Stage on Kongens Nytorv as are two third of the ballet performances.
