Copenhagen's City Hall Square was covered in yellow and green colours as Brazilians celebrated the election of Rio de Janeiro as host city of the 2016 Olympic Games. Thousands of Copenhageners and visitors from the four candidate cities, Madrid, Rio, Tokyo and Chicago, had gathered to hear the International Olympic Committee announce the winner through a live broadcast from Copenhagen's Bella Center. Danish artists Aqua, D.A.D and Ida Corr entertained the crowds.
Copenhagen's City Hall Square was covered in yellow and green, people were hugging, jumping, screaming and crying. Even Brazil's President Lula da Silva cried when Rio de Janeiro was elected host city of the 2016 Olympic Games by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The announcement was broadcasted live from IOC's 121st Session from Bella Center in Copenhagen. Rio de Janeiro beat the other three candidate cities, Madrid, Tokyo and Chicago.
It will be the first time in history that a South American city will host the Olympics.
Massive party at City Hall Square
Thousands of Copenhageners, Spanish, Brazilians, Japanese, Americans and other nationalities visiting the city had gathered at Copenhagen's City Hall Square to follow the four cities' presentations to the members of the IOC during the day.
In the evening Danish artists such as pop group Aqua, rock band D.A.D. and singer Ida Corr entertained the happy crowd.
Copenhagen filled with celebrities
During the week of the IOC Session Copenhagen was filled wth elite athletes, sports stars, celebrities and world leaders. From America came President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and talk show queen Oprah Winfrey.
From Brazil came President Lula da Silva and Football legend Pelé. From Tokyo came Crown Prince Naruhito. From Spain came King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia. And many more.
