THE ROYAL CAFE

Royal CaféOld kings on the walls, laid back waiters on the floor and contemporary sushi-style open-faced sandwiches in the kitchen. Royal Copenhagen has opened a new and inspiring cafe inside its flagship store on Amagertorv.

The combination of Danish food and design in a feminine and humorous atmosphere characterises THE ROYAL CAFE. The cafe opened in April 2007 and completes the comprehensive renovation of Royal Copenhagen's flagship store and museum, now under one roof on Copenhagen's main shopping street, Strøget. Famous Danish design firms such as Holmegaard, Bang & Olufsen and Fritz Hansen have produced special fixtures and fittings for the cafe, which consists of long banquet tables and three-foot-high royal portraits and wall paintings with a twist of humor. Guests are met by pink walls and a ceiling with birch-leaf-patterned paper, when they enter the old building from 1616.

Smushi on the menuRoyal café smushies
The real crowd puller on the menu is "smushi" - Danish open-faced sandwiches prepared like sushi, served on royal service. But other Danish classics like "rødgrød med fløde" (a red berry pudding with cream) and "æblekage" (similar to apple charlotte) are also available - in an updated version, of course. All coffee and teas are of the finest quality and selected by coffee expert and the man behind the concept, Rud Christiansen, who together with Lo Østergaard have made the cafe a reality. Everyone's tastes vary, so visitors to the café are welcome to choose which of the Royal Copenhagen services they would like to eat or drink from.
