Slotsholmen

Slotsholmen is an island in the heart of the historic Copenhagen. For more than 600 years, the area has been the base for the Danish government. Here the kings used to live, and today this is where you'll find the parliament.

Slotsholmen is home to Christiansborg Castle and the ruins of the old castle, besides a number of key ministries, and the Supreme Court. On Slotsholmen is also a wide range of cultural institutions and museums, including the Royal Library, the National Archives and its 7000 sqm green roof garden, Tøjhusmuseet (The Royal Danish Arsenal), Theatre Museum, Thorvaldsen's Museum and the Danish Jewish Museum.

It is easy to get to the island in the heart of Copenhagen by bus, metro or harbour bus

Christiansborg Palace houses the Danish Parliament, Supreme Court, and Ministry of State. It is also used by the Royal Family for various functions and events.

A visit to the Danish Jewish Museum, designed by Daniel Liebeskind, will give you a good insight into the enthralling universe of Danish Jewish culture and its 400 year history.

Beneath the Christiansborg Palace lie the ruins of an even older building - the Palace's oldest predecessors, Bishop Absalon's Castle of 1167 and Copenhagen Castle that replaced it.

Christiansborg is outstanding in the respect that here you will find, under the same roof, Denmark's political centre of today and the remains of the country's principal castle of the Middle Ages.

The Black Diamond is an extension to the Royal Library in Copenhagen. The building also houses The National Museum of Photography, a bookshop, eateries and a concert and theatre hall.

At the Black Diamond, you can see Søren Kierkegaard's manuscripts which are kept safely in Royal Library's Søren Kierkegaard Archive.

The staircase is the scene in "Borgen" on the night of the election.

The Royal Danish Arsenal Museum boasts an excellent selection of antique and modern weapons, ranging from beautifully ornamented princely weapons and war trophy firearms to handguns.

The Theatre Museum is situated in the Old Court Theatre. Its collection describes Danish theatre history from the 1700s to the present day.

17 January 1772 the theatre was also center stage for a dramatic event. It was after a masquerade ball at the court theatre that Queen Caroline Mathilde and her lover Johan Friedrich Struensee were arrested and charged with lèse-majesté.

Thorvaldsens Museum is a single-artist museum in Copenhagen, dedicated to the art of Danish neoclassicistic sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen.
