Sarah's Copenhagen

17-year-old Sarah grew up in one of Copenhagen’s western suburbs. The young woman won the Danish X Factor in 2011 with her voice and personality, and when she simultaneously came out as a lesbian at the age of just 15, she immediately became a role model for young homosexuals across Denmark.

In 2011 she was awarded that year’s Salmon, a prize awarded by Copenhagen Pride to a person who "swims against the tide", and in 2012 she was one of the judges in the Mr. Gay competition.

"I love Copenhagen. I was born in Copenhagen, and I shall die in Copenhagen. No matter where I am in the world, I will come back to die in Copenhagen," says Sarah. "Copenhagen is a fantastic place to be gay, and it's a city full of life and different people. It’s a city where one can get completely "lost" and constantly discover new places."

When Sarah goes out, she likes to go to the lesbian bar Vela, where she knows the bartenders and everybody is welcome. Thus she often brings her heterosexual girlfriends. If she’s looking to go clubbing, she prefers LEZ' monthly parties.

Loves to shop

"When it comes to clothes, there goes the woman in me," she laughs. "My favorite store is Carlings on Købmagergade, and I love Strøget [Copenhagen’s major pedestrian shopping street. red]". If she’s thirsty, she grabs a chai latte from Baresso. Another place that Sarah likes to go is Wild Cat by Nørreport station, where she has gotten all her tattoos.

She is also an FC Copenhagen fan and often goes to PARKEN national stadium to watch her favorite team play. Therefore, it was a dream come true when she won the X-Factor finale in that very place in 2011. Another dream of hers has always been to perform in Tivoli Gardens, where she practically grew up.

Tivoli is my heart

Sarah's mother has worked in Tivoli Gardens for many years, and thus Sarah has been coming here since she was little. "Tivoli is my heart to Copenhagen," she says. 22 September 2012 her dream comes true again, when she performs in Tivoli Gardens for the first time.

One of the annual highlights for Sarah is Copenhagen Pride. "I love to be at the Pride. Here I am in the company of my fellow human beings who understand who I am. It's a nice place to be with a lot of love as well as sweet and wonderful people," Sarah says.

Baresso is Danish chain of coffee and espresso shops.

Carlings is the place to go if you are looking for new jeans or a comfortable shirt. Located in the heart of Copenhagen, Carlings offers a wide variety of casual clothes for both men and women.

Copenhagen Pride ›

Every year in August Copenhagen Pride takes place.

Five days of gay events, which ends with a big parade through the streets of Copenhagen.

Parken is Denmark's national stadium and venue for big concerts and events. This is where the national football team plays its home games, and where the successful club, FC Copenhagen, has its home ground.

Copenhagen's largest shopping area is centered around Strøget in the heart of the city.

Strøget is one of Europe's longest pedestrian streets with a wealth of shops, from budget-friendly chains to some of the world's most expensive brands.

Tivoli is a must for all children and those who like to play. Tivoli is located just a few minutes walk from City Hall, and with the Copenhagen Central Station as its nearest neighbour it is very easy to get to.

In 2013 Tivoli Gardens will present a new 600 m2 Tycho Brahe area with three new rides, one of them being the 4G ride Aquila, live music on the programme every day, fireworks every Saturday and international artists like Sting and Suede live on the open air stage.

Vela is Copenhagen's only exclusively Lesbian bar and nightclub, located in the trendy Vesterbro-area.

At Vela the girls are drinking beer, shots, dancing in the bar, playing bar games, kissing in the corners, smoking cigarettes and partying till dawn. Whatever time of day the party is always on.
