Kierkegaard's Copenhagen

5 May 2013 is Søren Kierkegaard's (1813-1855) 200th birthday. The writer and philosopher will be celebrated by Golden Days and Søren Kierkegaard Research Centre at University of Copenhagen. Search Kierkegaard2013.dk for events throughout the year.

Even if Kierkegaard's life and work today interests the whole world, he was himself a very local fellow. He was born, lived and died in Copenhagen and only went abroad a few times. He put his mark on the city - physically as well as spiritually.

Søren Kierkegaard walked the streets of Copenhagen and his promenades are world famous. Even today you can walk in his footsteps through the city.

Kierkegaard walks went through the posh Østergade, Højbroplads, Slotsholmen, King's New Square (Kongens Nytorv), Amaliegade, Toldboden, Nyboder, King’s Garden (Kongens Have) to Amagertorv and back home to the writing desk again. On his walks he watched and sensed his fellow men, situations and conversations he heard on the streets and later transformed into the notes and records.

On Assistens Cemetery Kierkegaard ended his days. You can see his grave there, and in front of The Royal Library you can visit a statue, erected in memory of the great thinker.

Promenade the streets of Copenhagen and bring your note book and like Kierkegaard would have done, take a close look at what and whom you pass on your way through the city…
