Art

Copenhagen is a great place for art whether you are interested in purchasing from one of the city's many galleries or if you just feel like browsing through the art museums around town. Also watch for the lovely murals scattered out on the city’s residential buildings.

Situated in scenic surroundings Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, a little North of Copenhagen, and ARKEN Museum of Modern Art, a little south of Copenhagen, are both havens for lovers of modern and contemporary art.

The Danish National Gallery in central Copenhagen houses temporary exhibitions as well as three permanent collections of paintings and sculptures, graphic art and plaster casts.

ARKEN Museum of Modern Art south of Copenhagen shows exhibitions with the greatest, Modernist and contemporary artists.

Artists have been moving into galleries and studies ever since the 1990s. Today you can visit as many as 25 different artists in the street.

The galleries are open the first Sunday of every month.

Buddha, barok og bryggeren ›

With the exhibition From Buddha to the Baroque the Glyptotek will exhibit brewer Carl Jacobsen's unknown collections that reveals a great diversity including both Baroque sculptures and Buddha statues.

The Danish Design Museum in Copenhagen offers displays of decorative art, crafts, and industrial designs from the Western world and Asia from the late Middle Ages and up to the present.

Dexter Bang Sinister ›

This spring, the Research Programme at Charlottenborg in Copenhagen will operate under  New York-based designers-editors-publishers,

Dexter Sinister (Stuart Bailey and David Reinfurt) and Danish thinker-curator-writer Lars Bang Larsen under the compound title 'Dexter Bang Sinister'.

The museum tells the history of Dragør's development.

The museum consists of Havnemuseet and of the fishing vessel Elisabeth K571 that took an active part in saving the Danish Jews during world war 2.

Finn Juhl 100 years ›

This year the Danish designer Finn Juhl would have turned 100. This causes for a celebration, and so The Art museum Ordrupgaard and the Finn Juhl House invites everybody to come by for a day with tours, jazz and beautiful furnitures.

At the J. F. Willumsens Museum in Frederikssund you can see the collection of artist J. F. Willumsen's painting, drawings, ceramics, sculptures, photographies and architecture.

The National Gallery has special exhibtions for kids and a nice café serving brunch and lunch.

You will find the impressive National Museum of Photography in the basement below the Black Diamond.

The Royal Library has collected an impressive array of photographic materpieces. A careful estimate suggests a collection of more than 50.000 photos.

Experimental and innovative art.

Nikolaj, Copenhagen Contemporary Art Center, is located in the former Nikolaj Church at Nikolaj Plads in the centre of Copenhagen and functions as the city's exhibition space for contemporary art.

The art museum is founded by the brewer Carl Jacobsen and contains two main departments of ancient and modern art in fabulous architectural surroundings.

You can view collections of Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan and Roman art as well as Danish and French paintings and sculptures of the 19th and 20th century.

Ordrupgaard comprises one of Northern Europe's finest collections of French anf Danish art.

A very different integration of old and new architecture can be seen here. The architect, Iraki-born Zaha Hadid, was inspirated by the landscape when designing flowing lines of concrete and glass follow the gentle undulation of the North Sjælland landscape.

Modern portraits at the castle

This is the third year in a row that the J.C. Jacobsen's portrait competition has been held.

This has now resulted in an exhibition with 129 participating portraits at The Museum of National History at Frederiksborg Castle.
