Art

Copenhagen is a great place for art whether you are interested in purchasing from one of the city's many galleries or if you just feel like browsing through the art museums around town. Also watch for the lovely murals scattered out on the city’s residential buildings.

Situated in scenic surroundings Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, a little North of Copenhagen, and ARKEN Museum of Modern Art, a little south of Copenhagen, are both havens for lovers of modern and contemporary art.

The Danish National Gallery in central Copenhagen houses temporary exhibitions as well as three permanent collections of paintings and sculptures, graphic art and plaster casts.

ART Copenhagen - The Nordic Art Fair ›

Forum Copenhagen opens its doors for more than 100 Nordic galleries.

Artists have been moving into galleries and studies ever since the 1990s. Today you can visit as many as 25 different artists in the street.

The galleries are open the first Sunday of every month.

The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is a world-class museum located in the centre of Copenhagen. The Café in the extraordinary palmtree garden serves light lunch dishes and pastry from own production.

The Danish COBRA artist Carl-Henning Pedersen would have turned 100 years in 2013, and ARKEN is celebrating his birthday with a special exhibition featuring 200 of the artist's works.

Gallery for fine art photography. In the high ceiling and well lit galleries a full range of fine art photography is shown, with an equal emphasis on both classic and contemporary artists of both Danish and international origin.

The Danish Design Museum in Copenhagen offers displays of decorative art, crafts, and industrial designs from the Western world and Asia from the late Middle Ages and up to the present.

Earlier, the museum was the first public hospital in Denmark; The Royal Frederik's Hospital, where Søren Kierkegaard was admitted and died in 1855.

Dragør Museum tells the history of Dragør's development. It is about the herring markets of the middle age and the great period of the sailing ships.

In the museum's posession is also the famous fishing vessel Elisabeth K571 that took an active part in saving the Danish Jews during World War II.

Five hundred years of art unfold themselves in a new display at the National Gallery of Denmark.

From Medieval times to the Enlightenment, European Art 1300-1800 takes you on a tour of the most important periods and styles within Western art.

The Art museum Ordrupgaard celebrates the centenary of Finn Juhl. His private home built in 1942 - right next to Ordrupgaard - is open to the public.

Flowers and World Views ›

The National Gallery of Denmark opens its doors for the exhibition, Flowers and World Views, and presents a parade of two hundred years’ worth of flower paintings.

The exhibition shows around 300 paintings.

The work of Danish painter, sculptor and graphic artist, Henry Heerup (1907-1993) is placed in a fine, light building in Rødovre.

Throughout the year, the Charlottenborg Exhibiton Hall mounts different Danish and international exhibitions of contemporary art, architecture and decorative arts.

Mary Cassatt ›

Ordrupgaard shows a large selection of Mary Cassatt's best graphic works from the first experiments in collaboration with Edgar Degas to the later works of her favourite subject, mother and child.

You will find the impressive National Museum of Photography in the basement below the Black Diamond.

The Royal Library has collected an impressive array of photographic materpieces. A careful estimate suggests a collection of more than 50.000 photos.

Nikolaj, Copenhagen Contemporary Art Center, is located in the former Nikolaj Church at Nikolaj Plads in the centre of Copenhagen and functions as the city's exhibition space for contemporary art.

The art museum is founded by the brewer Carl Jacobsen and contains two main departments of ancient and modern art in fabulous architectural surroundings.

You can view collections of Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan and Roman art as well as Danish and French paintings and sculptures of the 19th and 20th century.

Ordrupgaard comprises one of Northern Europe's finest collections of French anf Danish art.

A very different integration of old and new architecture can be seen here. The architect, Iraki-born Zaha Hadid, was inspirated by the landscape when designing flowing lines of concrete and glass follow the gentle undulation of the North Sjælland landscape.

ARKEN takes a closer look on sense of community and how it is projected in various ways in 17 contemporary artworks.

The Spring exhibition at Charlottenborg is an open, juried exhibition. This year you can experience 74 artists from all over the world and explore art, architecture and design.

The Kronborg Galleries are a collaboration between numerous galleries all located around Kronborg Castle in Helsingør.

The artist Danh Vo has had an exact, full-scale copy of the Statue of Liberty made. Dividing it into approximately 400 parts, he has scattered the statue all across the world.

At The National Gallery of Denmark, you will be able to experience a total of approximately 100 elements in the Sculpture Street.
