Architecture

Celebrated architects such as Sir Norman Foster, Henning Larsen, Jean Nouvel and Daniel Libeskind have all left their mark on Copenhagen. But still contemporary constructions blend in beautifully with the city's historical buildings and palaces.

 

The cityscape in the centre is dominated by four - six storey low-rises rather than the typical glass and steel high-rises found in other capitals. The key elements of the recent architectural boom in Copenhagen are water, space and light.

The emergence of bold urban planning and world-class architecture is found in three key areas: Ørestad, Copenhagen Port, including The Marble Pier, and Copenhagen city.

 

 

 

8TALLET follows the pattern of architectural master pieces in Ørestad in Copenhagen and is designed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), whom is also known for Denmark’s contribution to the World’s Fair in Shanghai.

BIG is also known for designing VM Husene (VM Houses) and VM Bjerget (VM Mountain) in Ørestad.

The Aller House stands eight stories tall and collects various media houses in one building on the outermost pier on Havneholmen.

Brygge Bridge was the first bridge over the harbour in Copenhagen in 50 years. It connects Havneholmen to Islands Brygge and is part of Copenhagen's system of walking and biking paths.

A visit to the Danish Jewish Museum, designed by Daniel Liebeskind, will give you a good insight into the enthralling universe of Danish Jewish culture and its 400 year history.

Copenhagen is the proud owner of a major Zoo with a new state of the art Elephant House, designed by Norman Foster.

One of the greatest Baroque works in Denmark, this palace was not built for residence, but used when the royals went hunting.

Set in Dyrehaven, the palace is closed to the public, but it is worth taking a stroll in the beautiful forest and admiring the exterior of the building.

The Art museum Ordrupgaard celebrates the centenary of Finn Juhl. His private home built in 1942 - right next to Ordrupgaard - is open to the public.

The National Archives has a green roof of 7,200 m2, and here you can take a ride on bicycle or skateboard or just hang out and enjoy a green space in the city center.

Havneholmen is a peninsula on Kalvebod Brygge in Copenhagen Harbour, home to a number of recent residential and commercial buildings.

The peninsula is located next to the shopping mall Fisketorvet, and is connected to to Islands Brygge via Bryggebroen.

The house is built into a green hill and is a prominent crystal prism. The walls are built of coarse materials such as stone, metal and wood, which gives the it a hippopotamus feel.

The IT-University in Ørestad is a modern piece of architecture full of light, air and energy.

Krystallen (the crystal) is beautifully located on Kalvebod Brygge and the building doesn't only look good. It's also sustainable.

Kvarterhuset is a 4,000 m2 culture centre located in Amager. The place offers a variety of cultural events and projects for both children and adults.

In June 2013, Maritime Museum of Denmark opens in Elsinore close to Copenhagen.

The museum is entering a brand new experience oriented era in a spectacular building designed by the internationally recognized architectural firm BIG, Bjarke Ingels Group.

Ordrupgaard comprises one of Northern Europe's finest collections of French anf Danish art.

A very different integration of old and new architecture can be seen here. The architect, Iraki-born Zaha Hadid, was inspirated by the landscape when designing flowing lines of concrete and glass follow the gentle undulation of the North Sjælland landscape.

SEB domicil Bymilen is an architectural beautiful building, located at the harbor at Kalvebod Brygge.

Sluseholmen is a peninsula in the South Harbour of Copenhagen.

Here, you will find beautiful buildings and Copenhagen's third harbour bath.

Stævnen is a light and modern apartment building located in natural surroundings in Ørestad. Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects are the architects behind the building, which was finished in 2009.

Superkilen is the new urban open space in Nørrebro located in the quarter of Mimersgade.

The park is divided into three main areas: The Red Square, The Black Market and The Green Park.

The Black Diamond is an extension to the Royal Library in Copenhagen. The building also houses The National Museum of Photography, a bookshop, eateries and a concert and theatre hall.

At the Black Diamond, you can see Søren Kierkegaard's manuscripts which are kept safely in Royal Library's Søren Kierkegaard Archive. 

The staircase is the scene in "Borgen" on the night of the election.

The Blue Planet - Aquarium is Northern Europe's largest aquarium and offers a unique experience for children and adults.

The Concert Hall is designed by the French architect Jean Nouvel, is an impressive work of architectural and acoustic design.

Concrete, steel and glass encase four architecturally different halls, where the acoustics can be tailored to a given ensemble or musical genre.

"The Habour is Yours" is an exhibition at Danish Architecture Center, where the development of Copenhagen's inner harbour is in focus. 

Visit Denmark’s largest art museum, featuring collections of Danish and international art, from the past 700 years, as well as, contemporary displays.

The National Gallery has special exhibtions for kids and a nice café serving brunch and lunch.

The Copenhagen Opera House is impressive in size, comprising fourteen floors and a main stage that can accommodate an audience of 1400 people.

This beautifully adorned building is designed by Danish architect Henning Larsen, with several other Danish artists contributing to its decor.

The Playhouse in Copenhagen is the national centre of dramatic art containing three stages with a total seating capacity of 1000 people.

The stunning foyer and accommodating café welcome you to enjoy the view across the inner city harbour, even without a ticket for a show.

The VM HOUSES are designed by Bjarke Ingels (BIG), Julian de Smedt (JDS Architects) and Plot. The building was completed in 2005 and was one of the first housing estates, which was erected in Ørestad City.

The houses are located next to the VM MOUNTAIN, also designed by Bjarke Ingels and Plot.

The prestigious VM MOUNTAIN in Ørestad City, is designed by architects Bjarke Ingels (BIG) and Plot.
It contains 80 residential units all with terrace decks and luxuriant roof gardens protruding from the building's base.

Ørestad North is Copenhagen’s modern center for culture, media, and communication technology, housing two university campuses and the Danish Broadcasting Corporation’s media center.

The area is an experimental environment for new lifestyles and urban spaces in a network society, situated in beautifully landscaped surroundings including several cannals.

Oresund Bridge offers an easy and fast way to get from Denmark to Sweden. It consists of both a bridge, a tunnel and the artificial island Peberholmen.
