Svend Olling from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has overall responsibility for the planning of the UN Climate Convention. We asked him five quick questions about the issues involved in an event of this scale.
- What are the greatest challenges in planning a conference on the scale of the UN Climate Change Convention?
It is not just the size that is the challenge, but also the the fact that this summit will involve heads of state and government. It is also a challenge that, currently, only a few hotels are located close to Bella Center. Planning the transport of the delegates to and from the conference site is going to be a major logistical feat.
- What are the benefits for Denmark and Copenhagen of hosting the Climate Change Convention?
If we actually succeed in reaching a global climate agreement in Bella Center, people will associate Copenhagen and Denmark with groundbreaking solutions within the environment and energy for years to come. That is something that will benefit our industry very positively and something I think most Danes would feel good about.
- What measures are you taking to minimise the environmental effects of the Climate Convention?
We are very concerned about limiting the direct environmental effect of the conference. For instance, our climate and environment profile is central to the selection of suppliers of catering services, transport and energy. Fortunately we have many experienced partners in these areas. But we are also aware that there is no way to completely avoid a liability from the conference. We see it as a necessary investment to reach a global climate agreement.
- In your eyes, what makes Copenhagen especially suitable for hosting the Climate Change Convention?
Denmark is already far ahead in the field of climate and the environment, and the Danish population is very engaged in the discussions. Many Danes think it natural that we should host the event. You almost sense a kind of pride. But, generally, Danish society has an excellent reputation for creating well-functioning environments for significant decisions making.
- What are you most looking forward when the conference is finished?
Having the most well deserved Christmas holiday ever together with my family.
