Copenhagen Galleries

Danish contemporary art has never had it better. International recognition and public acknowledgement have opened the gallery doors to a new generation of Danish artists, who are rapidly making their mark. And it's thanks to the galleries' rapid assimilation of this new movement, and their willingness to take risks with relative unknowns, that the international profile of contemporary Danish art is assured.

Gallery Weinberger (in Valkendorfsgade), Bie & Vadstrup and Gallery Faurschou (both Store Strandstræde) together with Galleries, Asbæk, Michael Andersen and Susanne Ottesen have established Gallery DCA on 525, West 22. Street in New York, where the hottest Danish artists are given space. The latter three galleries are also important to the international scene in their presentation of international artists in Copenhagen, with mostly European, but also Russian, American and Japanese among recent offerings.

In Copenhagen, there has never before been so much variety available, with provocative video installations rubbing shoulders with established Danish painters and sculptors - and the range of experiences available during a stroll down just a single street is impressively varied: Bredgade, in the heart of Copenhagen’s financial district, is home to Gallery Christian Dam, Gallery Birch, and Gallery Asbæk, is platform for cutting edge Danish artists which also presents two international exhibitions every year.

In the city itself, Nikolaj Contemporary Art Center, in its spacious converted church setting and Rundetårn situated half way up the 209 metre long spiral path of Christian IV’s famous round tower, provide historical frames for shifting exhibitions of contemporary art. Hence, in contrast to many major European cities, Copenhagen’s contemporary art galleries are relatively centralised making a one day recce a distinct possibility for the intrepid art lover, with time left to return to savour one or two exhibitions at leisure.
