Stars rain over Copenhagen
Copenhagen is one of Europe's leading gastronomic capitals. In the new Michelin Guide 2009 Copenhagen is awarded a record total of 14 stars which is more than cities such as Rome, Berlin, Vienna and Madrid.
Two additional stars compared to last year proves that Copenhagen is indeed one of Europe's leading gastronomic capitals. The city now boasts a total of 14 stars and 13 Michelin-starred restaurants.
One of the two new restaurants awarded a star is restaurant Herman in the Tivoli Gardens. Uniquely for an amusement park, Tivoli now has two Michelin-starred restaurants.
Many of the Michelin-starred restaurants are owned by young chefs who work in the kitchens themselves.
New Nordic Cooking
In recent years, the Nordic culinary tradition has been rediscovered and modernized and it has set off a whole new focus on innovative Nordic cooking and the Danes' use of seasonal ingredients and high quality produce.
This change has been led by Copenhagen's restaurants, which, over the last decade in particular, have been recognised by top food writers, gourmets and gourmands from around the world.
In the light of the modernization of Nordic food, Copenhagen has its own food festival - Copenhagen Cooking. It is held for the fifth time in 2009 from August 21 to 30. The city will be serving everything the Scandinavian cuisine has to offer.
