New Danhostel in the heart of Copenhagen

A new Danhostel is set to open in Copenhagen's city centre this month. Overnight stays start at just DKK 165 at Danhostel Copenhagen Downtown, with Strøget, the pedestrian shopping street, and Rådhuspladsen, city hall square, just around the corner.

The town house on Vandkunsten has 300 beds, lounge and reception, plus a café that opens out onto the street. The hostel is the first of its kind in the Nordic region, with art and culture being a central part of its concept. The owners envisage it becoming an international meeting place for artists, tourists and the people of Copenhagen to experience the cultural life of the capital at close quarters.

Focus on culture, art and ambience

Behind the new concept are entrepreneurs Viggo Jensen and Jesper Elkjær who, with the backing of a group of investors, have invested in the renovation of the property. In their words:

- Danhostel Copenhagen Downtown will help to give Copenhagen the throbbing pulse of a big city, and this is our contribution to the vision of the Municipality of Copenhagen of creating a metropolitan zone in the city. What makes us different is that we focus on culture, art and ambience ahead of room service and expensive rooms. The hostel will provide the setting for informal art and culture, events and exhibitions and, with overnight accommodation starting at DKK 165, Copenhagen is no longer the reserve of wealthy tourists. The low price is vital to the type of environment and the diversity we wish to create.

Copenhagen's cheapest hotel room

- Danhostel has welcomed Copenhagen Downtown into the hostel's chain organisation, where the new concept is a fine supplement to the many different types of hostel within the chain, explains General Secretary Christian Dorph.

- The hostel concept is under constant renewal, and Copenhagen Downtown is an exciting and innovative type of hostel that is certain to attract new guests. In Copenhagen alone, we now have four hostels, each with their own special qualities, so there is something for everyone. Danhostel Copenhagen Downtown is now the most centrally-located hostel, where you can stay in pleasant city-centre surroundings without it costing an arm and a leg, he says.
