Denmark has a new royal playhouse

The Royal Danish Playhouse in Copenhagen, which opened in February 2008, is Denmark's new national stage for the dramatic arts. But with its scenic location right on the waterfront, an oak footbridge, café and restaurant with indoor and outdoor serving, not to mention the spectacular architecture of the building itself, it offers a lot more.

The Royal Danish Playhouse on the Copenhagen waterfront has been the dream of the Royal Danish Theatre for 130 years. A custom designed house to offer audiences the ultimate in theatrical experience. With 650 and 200 seats respectively in the two main auditoriums and 100 seats in the Studio Stage, the dream came true in February 2008.

But the Royal Danish Playhouse has even more to offer theatregoers. The waterfront foyer, promenade and footbridge terrace will also be used as venues for events of every kind. And in addition to the seasonal repertoires, the playhouse will host public lectures, children's activities, small concerts and a wide range of dramatic events.

Café and restaurant

From early morning at 8 am till midnight the café and restaurant are open for both theatregoers and passers-by alike. Enjoy a coffee in the morning, experience the afternoon box office buzz or evening excitement as theatregoers arrive for performances. Or stroll along the scenic oak footbridge, which connects the foyer with Nyhavn and the city's main harbour front promenade, Langelinie.

Spectacular architecture

The playhouse was masterminded by Danish architects Lundgaard & Tranberg and is approximately 20,000 square metres big - about half the size of the Royal Danish Theatre's opera house across the harbour. The dark relief-patterned cladding on interior and exterior walls is crafted from ceramic tiles kilned using English fireclay, the stage tower exterior is clad with copper, and the footbridge is made of oak timber. Artwork in the foyer is by visual artist Finn Reinbothe, while two special conference/ VIP rooms have been designed by the artists John Kørner and Peter Holst Henckel respectively. The ambiance lighting in the large sheathed glass façade of the 3rd floor is designed by lighting designer Jesper Kongshaug.
