A bench, bicycles, cycling lanes, a playground and a harbour pool with Denmark's grand old lady - The Little Mermaid - sitting in the middle. Those are just some of the Welfairytales about Danish city life, which will meet the 70 million visitors at this year's World Expo in Shanghai 1 May - 31 October 2010.
This year's theme of the World Expo is Better City, Better Life. Reflecting the world's common wish for a better living in future urban environments. Thus from 1 May - 31 October 2010 you can experience the essence of Danish life at the Danish Pavilion in Shanghai, China.
At The Danish Pavilion you can visit the original and famous Little Mermaid by foot or by city bike. You can let your children run around on the playground. You can enjoy a picnic and dip your toes in the water in the harbour pool.
The building itself is a monolithic steel structure designed by Danish architects Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG) as a double spiral with pedestrian and cycling lanes taking you from the ground and through two curves up to a level of 12 metres and down again.
Welfairytales of today and tomorrow
Danish artist Jeppe Hein - co-owner of Copenhagen's Karriere bar - has designed a social white steel bench functioning as a barrier between the pedestrians and the cyclists. And in the shop, you can purchase Danish design and lifestyle products designed for tomorrow.
On the culinary side of life - in the welcome bar and the roof top café - you can embark on a journey which has its outset in the traditional Danish kitchen, arranged by Danish restaurant Aamanns Etablissement with a modern touch and with the freshest and finest ingredients as commonly enjoyed in Denmark.
The Danish Expo concept, Welfairytales, presents tales of today and tomorrow from Hans Christian Andersen's native country. Imagine an unfolded living fairytale book, which combines art, images, film, words and sound and invites visitors to try out the Welfairytales themselves.
