Every year on The Little Mermaid's birthday, a crowd of women - young and old - jump in the waters which surround the statue in order to celebrate her. You too can become a mermaid for a day.
23 August 2009 one of Denmark's most famous tourist sights, The Little Mermaid turns 96 years old. This important birthday will be celebrated by 96 or more young and adult women swimming in the waters surrounding the old girl together shaping the numer 96.
Televised worldwide
On the quay there will be music and a Hans Christian Andersen fairytale parade, and the wannabe mermaids will cheer the statue in the traditional Danish way, with flags and balloons. The whole event will be filmed for Danish as well as international television. In 2008 pictures from the celebration were seen by some 50 million viewers all over the world.
