Amalienborg med garden i galaBetween Kongens Nytorv and Kastellet you will find the district called Frederikstaden or...

Amalienborg District
This area was laid out during the reign of King Frederik V ((1746-1776) in the Danish Rococco period with the help of his court architect, Nicolai Eigtved. Especially the grand plan of the four wings of Amalienborg Palace, the Marble Church and the many stately buildings gives this part of Copenhagen a distinguished character.

C.F.Hansen, Architect
After the fires in 1794 and 1795 and the British bombings in 1801 and 1807, Denmark was declared bankrupt in 1813. Building activity, especially in the hands of the architect C.F.Hansen, was carried out on limited budgets and often included the sooty walls of the ruins of older buildings.

Three fine examples
Three buildings are fine examples of Neo-Classicism:
Copenhagen's Cathedral
called The Church of Our Lady near Copenhagen University,
The Palace Church at Christiansborg
The Court House at Nytorv off Strøget,

All three have the characteristic façade of Neo-Classicism with columns inspired by Greek and Roman antique temples.
