Consumers in Copenhagen demand both organic and environmentally friendly products, and the retailers have been paying attention. In the capital, you will thus find a growing number of shops exclusively selling organic products and services. Here is a selection of beauty salons, hairdressers, grocery shops as well as clothing, shoe and skin care shops.

AnielAniel

In this fine, angel-inspired boutique in the district of Frederiksberg you can purchase the cutest baby and children's clothing, wooden toys and interior design made of organic and natural materials.

The boutique is named after Aniel - the angel of nature and everything green. Aniel is also connected to beauty, harmony, peace and love, and the boutique fully lives up to its name. The natural textiles are kept in pale pinks and light blues.

The old butcher's shop at Kultorvet square is popularly known simply as the organic butcher. organic meat is always best was the slogan used by Jens, the owner, who has sold organic meat only since 1997 from the more than 100-year-old shop.

Animal welfare and good taste were the two main reasons for introducing the organic policy more than ten years ago, before the environmental movement had really caught on in Copenhagen. The shop is one of the last butcher's shops in Denmark, where the sale of meat and the way it is cut up is done the old fashioned way.

Also the homemade cold cuts and spreads for the open-faced Danish sandwiches are popular. All members of the staff wear bowler hats, which is the traditional butcher headdress.

Eco EgoEco Ego

Eco Ego on Nørre Farimagsgade is a lifestyle store with clothing, shoes, bags, maternity wear, skin care products, glass, toys and things for the garden. Everything is organic, fair trade and/or sustainable.

Eco Ego is decorated with the use of recycled and environmentally friendly materials and furniture. The paint is natural paint, electronic appliances are environmentally friendly, and they try to reduce their water consumption.

The first organic supermarket in Copenhagen, Egefeld, is situated in the district of Frederiksberg, and a second branch has later opened in Valby. This supermarket is quite a Mecca for the quality conscious consumer with an atmosphere that brings forth memories of the old Danish grocery store.

Service is tops and the goods tastefully displayed on the shelves. The shop has an assortment of approximately 3,000 different goods, which means you can find all your daily necessities and some. Items range from organic toothpaste and cotton pads to groceries, meat, milk and cheese.

A café is also found on the premises, where you can enjoy special brands of coffee, freshly squeezed fruit juices, muffins and scones - all organic, of course.

The organic hairdresser Green Mind Copenhagen is a certified green salon. The woman behind the hairdressing salon, Bente Aagaard, has united professional haircuts with organic hair dye colour and products.

Products that do not contain harmful chemicals and are organic, allergy and environmentally friendly.

Shop K29 is a mini department store with sustainable eco chick clothing, shoes and silver jewelry. The shop in the heart of Copenhagen sells brands such as Maxjenny, Margareta Forslund, Owe Johansson, Rich Hippie, Nature Girl, Mettes Afrika and Jonas Lindholm.

Behind K29 in Kompagnistræde is mother Margareta, father Owe and daughter Maxjenny, who began as a furniture designer. Now she designs organic clothing like her edgy and architectural collection for women who appreciate a touch of art and fashion in their wardrobe.

The collection is called I am the new black and includes dresses, trousers and coats. It is a tribute to the female body and made of stretchy materials. Maxjenny only uses sustainable and organic materials such as hemp silk, bamboo, organic cotton and recycled polyester in the form of recycled plastic bottles. All the clothes can be washed at 30 degrees.

Lev Vel on Store Kongensgade in Copenhagen city centre is a stylish and bright shop selling organic tea, chocolate, non-prescription medicines, vitamins and skin care products for both men and women. All products have Lev Vel's own eco guarantee that no unnecessary chemicals have been added.

In the shop you will also find a number of accessories, like scented candles, hair accessories, hand embroidered toilet bags and cosmetic pouches, which are chosen based on the principles of health, wellness, environment, sustainability and fair trade.

BreadNaturbageriet

If you want your bread and pastry to be organic and tasty, visit the organic bakery Naturbageriet for a treat. The ingredients are organic, and most of the bread is baked on spelt flour.

Everything is baked on a farm and brought fresh from the oven to the shops where you can also purchase a large selection of organic juices, dairy products, marmelade, honey, müsli and soya milk.

Oz hairdresser 

Another green experience is to get your hair done at Oz on Vesterbrogade. Here you can get an organic haircut or have your hair dyed at very reasonable prices. The small salon has been organic since it opened in 1998, and all products are made without chemical colours or disolvents.

The owner endeavours to have only environmentally friendly, biodynamic and organic products in the salon, and the beauty products come from Danish and German producers known for their respect for the environment.

This somewhat smal organic grocery store is situated in the district of Nørrebro and offers one of the city's largest selections of fresh organic and biodynamic fruit and vegetables. The store's philosophy is to make quality organic products available for everyone.

Owner Sune Brandt has always been an enthusiastic environmentalist and, right from the start, the purpose has been to bring the organic products in Copenhagen to a higher level. In the shop's pleasant atmosphere you will find a fine selection of health care and cleaning products, vitamins and minerals as well as meat, bread, dairy products and candy.

On popular Islands Brygge is another organic grocery store focusing on quality and good taste. At PureGreen the environment conscious consumer can purchase everything for daily use and be sure that all the products he or she gets are pure, organic and tasty.

There are many fine wines and delicatessen from small Danish and international suppliers, and all goods have a story to tell. There are also beauty and health care products, products for baby care and for cleaning and a lot of home decoration acessories. The latter are often made of recycled materials or in some other way environmentally friendly.

Denmark's first organic perfumery specialising in organic beauty care, hair treatment and make up is located in Grønnegade in downtown Copenhagen.

All the skin care products at Pure Shop are organic, based on plants and are without synthetic, unhealthy, hormone disruptable or environmentally damaging components. The boutique interior is light and airy and many well known brands from organic producers can be found there.

Spidsroden

This pleasant organic store in a basement in the district of Nørrebro sells most organic foodstuffs at reasonable prices. Here you can buy milk and cheese from Øllingegaard, cold cuts and spread from Lykkedal and meat from Hanegal.

DGI-Byen1Sundform

Behind the name Sundform is a combination of a hairdresser and beauty parlour situated in the heart of Copenhagen. The salon offers a wide range or organic treatments and products that focus on beauty and well-being.

In consideration of the environment and health the salon has, to the greatest extent possible, exchanged harmful chemicals with green products from among others John Masters Organics, Zenz Therapy, The Organic Pharmacy and Logona. Pamper yourself with international beauty treatments from facials to full body massages, waxing, make up or zone therapy.

Sungifu in downtown Copenhagen is an organic and fair trade lifestyle shop with shelves filled with lots of quality goods for children and grown-ups. The shop sells organic and ethical baby and children's clothing, fashion wear, skin care products and acessories. The materials are mainly silk, pure wool, linnen and cotton, and all are organic or sustainable.

Norwegian owner Ingvild has chosen environmentally friendly brands such as Edun and Ayamara that have specialised in fair trade knitwear for adults. There are also rustic bedlinnen, wooden toys with plant oils and natural colours, soft toy animals and the skincare series The Organic PharmacyThe name Sungifu is ancient Nordic and means gift of the sun.

ZenzZenz 

Haidresser Anne-Sophie Villumsen's salon in Copenhagen is named Zenz. The environmentally conscious staff offers quality hair and beauty treatments with products, with the lowest possible risk of containing allergy causing, cancer causing or hormone disrupting ingredients.

Members of the staff know a lot about organic hair dye and products and are always ready to give advice and guidance.

Zenz has produced its own line of beauty products called Zenz Therapy. As part of your treatment, a free foot bath is included, and you are offered organic coffee, green tea or organic fruit. The beauty salon runs windmill energy.
