And for the first time in 14 years the ice on the famous Lakes in Copenhagen is now so thick that you can go ice skating on Peblinge Lake.

Despite the municipality's ban Copenhageners have recently had their share of fun on the Lakes in the middle of Copenhagen.

The rest of the year the Lakes are a favourite hangout for Copenhageners who use the area for running, walking and relaxing with their loved ones.

12 January 2010 the Municipality of Copenhagen allowed skating on the ice. The thickness of the ice is measured daily, and there will be signs telling you, exactly where on the Lakes you are permitted to go.

The situation changes according to the weather, so watch the signs before you walk out onto the ice.

You can also check the municipality's website, listed below. It is in Danish, but look for 'Peblinge Sø v. Søpavillionen' on the list at the bottom of the page. If it says 'JA', it is safe to move about on the ice.
