Copenhagen to Host Inernational Olympic Congress

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) decided at its 118th session that Copenhagen will host its prestigious 2009 congress.

With the vote in Torino on 8 February 2006 Copenhagen won the chance to host the IOC Congress 2009 ahead of six other cities, including Athens, Cairo, Mexico City and Singapore.

Wonderful Copenhagen has worked intensively together with representatives from Copenhagen City Council, DIF, the Culture Ministry and Idrætsfonden Denmark to win the conference and Wonderful Copenhagen sees great significance in the decision.

 - The vote is recognition of Copenhagen as one of the world’s leading congress cities. The ICO session is the highest profile sporting event in the world. When Copenhagen was chosen it was a seal of approval on the work undertaken in recent years to make the city an international sports and event destination, says Ole Andersen, Sales and Marketing Director of Wonderful Copenhagen.

Around 4,000 delegates are expected to visit Copenhagen during the nine day event but, perhaps more importantly, the eyes of the world will be focussed on the city as it is this congress that decides which city will host the 2016 Olympics. With this in mind, around 1,500 members of the press are also expected to descend on Copenhagen.

The congress and session will be held in Bella Center, which, at 118,000 m2, is Scandinavia's largest congress centre.

- The decision that Bella Centre shall provide the backdrop for this prestigious event means that we will now accelerate our Vision 2010 plans regarding the expansion of our congress facilities and the construction of a hotel. At the same time I hope that our energies will be focussed on creating a multi-arena beside Bella Center. It would be wonderful if the opening of the IOC Congress in the autumn of 2009 could take place in the Copenhagen Dome, says Arne Bang Mikkelsen, CEO of Bella Center.

The IOC Congress was last held in Singapore, where London was chosen as the host city for the 2012 Olympic Games.
