September 2005

Last year, the number of foreign direct investment projects into the Capital Region increased 57 %; from 37 investments in 2003 to 58 investments in 2004. The Capital Region has thus moved forward to a fourth place on the list of European metropolises getting most investment projects.

These are the findings in a new analysis made by Copenhagen Capacity based on figures from Ernst & Young's "European Investment Monitor" database. By way of comparison, in 1999, the Capital Region was number twenty on the list in 1999.

The 58 investment projects correspond to a market share in Europe at 2,0 %.

The increase in direct investment projects has taken place in spite of still tougher competition. The entrance in the EU of 10 new countries has opened new markets in central Eastern Europe. Together with a general trend towards outsourcing and off shoring, also within Europe's borders, the EU-enlargement has contributed to Eastern Europe having attracted far more investment projects than before.

Moreover, the analysis shows that the Øresund Region has become an attraction among the largest European regions. The proof of that is among other things that the number of investments projects that for Scandinavia as a whole is falling, has increased. Last year the Øresund Region had a Scandinavian market share (the number of investment projects) at 38 %, which is almost a doubling since 2001. When looking at the number of projects the Øresund Region had 76 projects in 2004, which places the Region third in Europe.

Scania has enlarged its number of foreign investment projects, which declined in Sweden as a whole. In 2004, Scania had 18 projects which is a marked difference compared to previous years. It is in fact interesting that Scania has been able to attract regional solutions such as main offices and other administration units. The still larger share of Swedish investments that go to Scania is partly due to the ongoing integration of the Øresund Region and the Capital Region's strong position on the European market. Malmö and Scania benefit from the integration with the Capital Region but it is certainly also the other way around.
