Facelifts, expansions and brand new hotels

In 2006 Copenhagen increased its hotel capacity with 450 new hotel rooms, and by the end of this year another four new hotels will have opened their doors. At the same time a number of existing hotels have completed or will complete renovations. As a result, the city now offers a wide selection of contemporary hotel accommodation. And the development continues. The Copenhagen city area Ørestad alone will gain 2,500 new hotel rooms over the next four years.

Currently, the Danish capital offers a choice of more than 13,000 hotel rooms spanning a wide range of accommodation from top-class, five-star hotels, to the low-price, contemporary designed rooms of Europe's largest city hostel. By the end of 2007 four new hotels will have been added to the city's portfolio. January saw the opening of the Ocean Hotel, a new mini hotel with only six rooms close to Copenhagen Airport; on May 1 a 130-room budget hotel opened on the outskirts of Copenhagen and the four-star Copenhagen Business Hotel will be ready to open its doors mid November. Meanwhile, on December 1 a new, exclusive 12-room hotel, the Copenhagen Living, will open in Copenhagen harbour. This will be Denmark's first floating hotel, offering three-star facilities.

- Once again, in 2007, Copenhagen has seen an increase in the number of bed nights - in the first seven months the overnight stays at hotels increased by more than 4%. Both hotel and airlift capacity has been expanding in recent years, which gives room for further growth in the future. The external outlook for further development of the convention market in Copenhagen also looks good, with a number of larger conventions such as e.g. European Congress of Rheumatology and 121 IOC Session and XIII Olympic Congress, booth in 2009.

Copenhagen has been one of Europe's growth centres since the late 1990s. The Copenhagen hotel boom began in 1999 with the opening of the First Hotel Vesterbro****. In 2001 both the 382-room Hilton Copenhagen Airport***** and the 395-room Copenhagen Marriott Hotel***** opened. These projects signalled the start of a major growth in the number of hotels in the city, a growth that continues to this day. Out of the total expansion of 2,800 rooms expected in the city within the coming four years close to 2,500 will be in the city area Ørestad. Among them will be the 800 room hotel to be built in conjunction to the Bella Center congress and conventions venue; and 700 rooms in what will be Denmark's largest low budget hotel.

As well as these significant increases in capacity, the fixed link between Sweden and Denmark - which opened in July 2000 - has meant that more than 28,000 hotel rooms are now available in the Øresund Region as a whole.

New hotels in 2007
Close to the sea and only 600 metres from Copenhagen Airport and the Øresund Bridge is the new Ocean Hotel. The hotel, which is housed in a restored villa, opened in January and offers just six, spacious double rooms plus an annex, which can host up to six guests. The rooms are fully equipped with television and wireless Internet, but without en suite bathrooms. The two bathrooms, one of them featuring a Jacuzzi, are situated in the hallway. The Danish hotel chain Zleep has just opened its third hotel in the Copenhagen region. The hotel is situated close to Ballerup Super Arena, 15km outside Copenhagen city centre. Zleep's concept is to offer travellers accommodation in pleasant surroundings, but without extra luxury. Denmark's first floating hotel, Copenhagen Living, will open its gangway for guests this December. The hotel will be located in the inner harbour just ten minutes walk from the down town area and is operated by the company Waterliving. The highly regarded restaurant ship, VIVA, adjacent to the hotel, will handle catering and room service for guests in the ship's 12 individually decorated rooms. The interior of the hotel will blend design classics with bespoke furniture specially made for the hotel, while the panoramic windows will afford guests an excellent view of the harbour and city. The rooms will be decorated by some of the most talented young artists in Denmark. Completed hotel renovations
Hotel Danmark***, a Brøchner Hotel, expanded its facilities with an Italian restaurant this January. The restaurant has an ‘urban' design and offers a flexible menu featuring everything from a gourmet dinner to lighter dishes. During the summer the restaurant expands out into the hotel's courtyard. As a result of a takeover by the hotel, conference and health complex, DGI-byen, the Copenhagen Hotel Astoria closed down for a thorough renovation before re-opening in June 2007. The Danish design company GUBI was been charged with the redesign and refurbishment of the three star hotel and turned it in to a modern design hotel with 93 rooms. The hotel is located next to the Central Station just a few minutes walk from DGI-byen. Hotel Phoenix Copenhagen****, which is a part of the Danish hotel chain Arp-Hansen Hotel Group, has just completed a renovation of the hotel's seven suites. The suites retains their unique, classic French Louis XVI inspired style, with all modern facilities and meeting tables offering the possibility of hosting smaller in-room meetings. Sørup Herregaard****, an old manor located in the heart of Sealand, just 45 minutes from Copenhagen, has recently completed a full renovation of the hotels 102 rooms. The new stile is modern and all rooms are equipped with B&O flat-screen TVs. Free wireless Internet is available throughout the buildings, and the hotel offers large-scale conference facilities; an outdoor tennis court, mini-golf and an indoor swimming pool with sauna. Ongoing hotel renovations
In early 2006 the Palace Hotel**** embarked on a comprehensive renovation of its historic premises dating from 1910. When completed late 2008, the hotel, located on Copenhagen's City Hall Square, will be a fully equipped, five star Lé Méridien Hotel. As of now 74 new rooms are ready to welcome guests but on completion the hotel will have a capacity of 162 rooms with top levels of comfort, as well as three conference rooms all fitted with state of the art technical equipment. Following a takeover of the three-star Copenhagen Ibis Hotel Triton, the boutique hotel chain, Guldsmed Hotels, closed the hotel down at the end of 2006 to commence a complete makeover. The hotel has now been re-launched as a four-star boutique hotel named Axel Hotel Guldsmeden**** with 129 rooms and suites; conference facilities for up to 40 people; a restaurant; and a bar with lounge area. By early 2008, a complete Spa- and wellness department will also open in this luxurious hotel. Breakfast consists of 100 % organic products, and meals purchased in the restaurant are also primarily organic. The Guldsmed Hotel Chain's concept is to offer intimate hotels with added luxury. Copenhagen's largest hotel, the Radisson SAS Scandinavia Hotel****, has recently commenced an extensive room renovation programme. Intense, warm colours dominate the new style, which is intended to create a homely atmosphere. The hotel has chosen to renovate four floors each year, which means that the full renovation of all 542 rooms will be completed in 2010. As the result of a takeover in September 2006 by Norway's Norlandia Hotels & Resorts, the Mercure Hotel Richmond Copenhagen, Mercure Hotel Copenhagen and Ibis Copenhagen Star Hotel have recently been relaunched with new interiors and new names. The Norlandia Richmond Hotel***, the Norlandia Mercur Hotel*** and the Norlandia Star Hotel*** are all situated near the City Hall Square and Tivoli Gardens. A fully renovation of all rooms has been completed and further renovations will be finished by December this year. Following the purchase by the Swedish company ProfilHotels AB in September 2006, the Sofitel Plaza Copenhagen Hotel and the Ibis Copenhagen Crown Hotel are now operated by the company's Danish subsidiary ProfilHotels A/S. The hotels will henceforth be known as the Copenhagen Plaza**** and Copenhagen Crown*** respectively. The Copenhagen Crown is set to undergo a renovation in the near future, intended to sharpen the hotel's profile. Meanwhile, the Copenhagen Plaza has already undergone renovation, primarily with a focus on the creation of a new international restaurant concept. Fredensborg Store Kro, in Northern Sealand, is currently undergoing a thorough renovation. The renovation of the hotel's 49 rooms has recently been completed with its elegant rooms individually decorated. As a result of the hotel's health policy all rooms are non-smoking and minibars have been removed. Guests will instead be offered fresh fruit and water. The conference facilities, which are next in line to be renovated, will be able to accommodate up to 200 people, and feature whiteboard, flip over, overhead and high speed Internet connection free of charge. They are all to be individually furnished with large tables and comfortable chairs. This final part of the renovation will begin in early 2008. The lobby and reception of the Brøchner-owned Hotel Kong Arthur**** underwent a thorough renovation last year. The hotel has also recently opened a brand new wing with 40 new rooms, and now offers 155 rooms in all categories. The new style is modern, yet still respectful of the hotel's historic ambience. The remaining 115 rooms will undergo a similar renovation during next year. As well as this an exclusive spa will soon offer guests a complete wellness experience. The spa, which is scheduled to open in November 2007, will offer personalised treatments combining exercise, face and body treatments, mental relaxation and a healthy diet. Pending hotel projects
From April 2008, visitors to the famous Tivoli Gardens will be able to stay at a hotel located in the gardens themselves. The hotel will be Copenhagen's first 'all-suite' hotel offering 13 exclusive suites - there will be no single or double rooms - all but one of them overlooking Tivoli Gardens. The hotel is a part of a unique complex which will also feature meeting facilities for 20 respectively 80 people, a gourmet restaurant, brasserie, delicatessen, a well-stocked Vinotek with all wines by the glass and with room for events for up to 100 people and a fully functioning dairy where organic fresh milk will be bottled, butter will be churned, and yoghurt and fresh cheese will be produced. The company behind the complex is Løgismose A/S famous for its wine importing; Summerbird chocolates; the luxury inn, Falsled Kro; and the Michelin-starred Copenhagen restaurant, Kong Hans Kælder. In June 2009 what will be one of Denmark's largest hotels will open in the city quarter Ørestad, close to the congress and convention venue Bella Center and next door to the largest shopping centre in Denmark, Fields. The two-star hotel will offer 700 rooms and be operated by the Danish budget hotel chain Cab Inn, which already operates three other hotels in Copenhagen. The hotel will include a breakfast cafe with space for 500 guests; a cafe/restaurant for 150; a conference centre with room for 200; a lobby bar; and a business centre. Also in 2009 the already impressive facilities of the congress and convention venue Bella Center are set to be augmented with a four-star hotel with a wellness-centre; a restaurant; a café; and a skybar. With 800 rooms the hotel will be the largest hotel in the Nordic region. Bella Center will itself construct the two, 75 metre high buildings, although the issue of who will run the hotel is currently under discussion with potential partners. The North Sealand picturesque old fishing village Gilleleje will also expand its capacities with a new state of the art full-scale spa and wellness resort. The resort will offer 200 rooms and have a view over an 18 hole golf course. The wellness centre includes a spa, which will offer a blend of European and Asian treatments; a variety of saunas; a swimming pool; and a complete fitness centre. Besides the wellness centre the resort will also offer a conference centre, which will be able to host up to 350 guests. The resort is expected to open in 2009 and will be run by the Finnish Sunborn Corporation. Early 2008, Sjælsø Gruppen will commence the construction of Copenhagen Towers, consisting of 130,000 sq m of exclusive office, hotel, conference and shopping facilities in the city area Ørestad. InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG), the owner of the Crowne Plaza brand, has recently signed a franchise agreement with CPH Hotel Management A/S, the company founded in order to run the hotel. The four-star hotel will hence be known as Crowne Plaza Copenhagen Towers with an opening scheduled for late summer 2009. 365 guest rooms will be found including four Suites and 39 Club Rooms, offering all the amenities expected from Crowne Plaza. Oscar Jensen Gruppen has recently received a license to commence the construction of a modern shopping/hotel/gallery venue in the southern end of the pedestrian street Strøget, near the City Hall Square. Within three years Copenhagen will see the opening of a major new Danish-designed congress centre in the city centre. The centre, which will be Copenhagen's second major congress venue, will be called Copenhagen Downtown Congress Centre. The congress centre will have a maximum capacity of 4,000 people, and its largest conference room will have space for up to 2,300 people. Above the congress centre itself, there will be a hotel complex offering 1,300 rooms in different categories.

The family owned Danish hotel chain, Arp-Hansen Hotel Group, is behind the new 75,000 m2 congress and hotel complex. The Arp-Hansen family has commissioned the Danish architect Kim Utzon to design the congress and hotel complex, which will be located just a stone's throw from Copenhagen's Central Station with easy access to Copenhagen Airport. As well as the 1,300 hotel rooms within the complex itself, its central location means that over 3,000 other city centre hotel rooms will be within easy walking distance. The Copenhagen Downtown Congress Centre is set to open in the second half of 2010, but the first of its three on-sight hotels will already be up and running by late 2009. www.arphansen.dk

Steen & Strøm, contractors behind Denmark's largest shopping centre, Fields, are currently busy with a large-scale hotel project. The four-star hotel will be located immediately adjacent to Fields in the city area Ørestad, offering approximately 400 fully equipped rooms, as well as highly flexible conference facilities with room for up to 2,500 people. An exclusive restaurant and stylish lounge areas will be located within the hotel complex. Opening is scheduled early 2010. The Icelandic company, Klasi hf, SHL development APS and the Danish architects Schmidt Hammer Lassen are behind another pending hotel project located in the city area Ørestad, close to the airport. Holistic House, a combined wellness, spa, fitness and health centre, will also include a hotel with 300 exclusive rooms designed for the purpose of total relaxation and recreation. Inspired by the Blue Lagoon of Reykjavik, the intention is to create a wellness- and health centre of the highest standard in Scandinavia.
