Cézanne & Giacometti at Louisiana

Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, north of Copenhagen, marks its 50th anniversary in 2008 with the exclusive exhibition Cézanne & Giacometti from 20 February - 29 June 2008.

From 20 February - 29 June 2008 Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, north of Copenhagen, presents its 50th anniversary exhibition Cézanne & Giacometti. Poul Erik Tøjner, director of the museum, and Felix Baumann, president of Alberto Giacometti Stiftung in Zürich and former director of Kunsthaus Zürich, have jointly organised the exhibition of the two artists Paul Cézanne and Alberto Giacometti.

Three exhibitions in one
The exhibition, which will only be shown at Louisiana, is both a new story of the two artists and their life and work, and a story about what art is, and what the artistic process of creation is. The exhibition consists broadly of three ‘chapters' - or three exhibitions in one.

The first chapter is a retrospective presentation of the great French painter Paul Cézanne (1839-1906). With about 50 works obtained from museums and collections all over the world, the visitors will be given an impression of the artist and his range of subjects. The second chapter is a retrospective presentation of just under 100 works by the Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966). The third chapter is a comparison of the two artists.

Parallel lives
Cézanne's and Giacometti's artistic lives show amazing parallels, and the theme of the exhibition has aroused great interest and evoked unique good will all over the world. This has resulted in generous loans from prestigious collections such as the National Gallery, London, the National Gallery of Art, Washington, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and MoMA, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Kunsthaus Zürich and Kunstmuseum Basel - as well as many other museums and collectors in Europe and the USA.
