Art lights up Copenhagen

Imagine landing in Copenhagen Airport getting greeted by a 145 metre tall screen showing spectacular installations...

During the UN Climate Summit 2009 travellers to and from Copenhagen will be met with a sensational sight. A 145 metre tall screen at the DONG Energy Power Station is showing spectacular light and video installations, projections which light up the dark hours.

The project is called Expanded Space and the projections will not only throw light on the power station, but will also create an extraordinary image of the energy of the future. It’s the German artist and architect group Mader Stublic Wiermann who will challenge the power station’s distinctive architectural profile by presenting the area through light and video projections on the facade of the power station. The fiction created by the projections is united with reality, when they move in time with the movement of the wind. Not only the force of the wind, but also the urban space is drawn in when customized vans drive around the area equipped with mobile projectors.

Highlights the Danish energy and climate issues
One of the artists behind Expanded Space, Alexander Stublic says: "Our work is always site specific, so we therefore decided to concentrate on Avedøre Holme’s dominant characteristics, which are energy production and transportation. Expanded Space creates a new visible layer using the power station and the customized vans, which will drive around distributing the layer into the area. Another point of interaction is how wind movement influences the installation. The installation adds a virtual layer to the city space, which in turn influences the actual circumstances on site.”

Afterwards, it will be possible to join the artists for a tour of the area, where you will be able to experience Expanded Space from a range of angles.

Expanded Space opens on the 8 December at 4 pm and can be experienced from sunset to sunrise at various locations in Hvidovre, just south of Copenhagen, during COP15.
