Royal Copenhagen's most popular dinnerware turns ten years old in 2010. Blue Fluted Mega is a modern version of the 235 year old classic Blue Fluted. The birthday is celebrated with new pieces and a Blue Fluted Mega cake at Conditori La Glace.
There are probably not that many children who get a birthday cake from Conditori La Glace at the age of ten. And there are probably even fewer who's morther is 235 years old.
It is nevertheless the case with Blue Fluted Mega - Royal Copenhagen's best-selling service ever.
Blue Fluted Mega was created as a tribute to the classic Blue Fluted dinnerware from 1775 by the then student Karen Kjældgård-Larsen as a part of her graduation project at the Danish School of Design.
Without knowing the legend she was about to create, she copied the old design, enlarged it and began to draw on it.
Tradition under the microscope
"I wanted to give people a feeling of looking at Blue Fluted through a microscope. It had to provoke and get people to see Royal Copenhagen from a new perspective. The result was modern, while it was true to the old service," says Karen Kjældgård-Larsen.
At Royal Copenhagen the design proposal was received with mixed feelings. Blue Fluted Mega was controversial, but mega modern. It was tradition and renewal at the same time.
Karen's design went into production, something which Royal Copenhagen has never regretted.
Mega growth
"It was not planned to be a big service. It just grew naturally, which I like," says Karen, who at age 12 drew her family's dinnerware on letterhead and sent it to Royal Copenhagen - in case they could use it for promotional purposes.
Due to the 10th birthday of the Blue Fluted Mega, new pieces have been added to the dinnerware.
In spring 2010, you can see an exhibition of Blue Fluted Mega on the first floor of Royal Copenhagen's Flagship Store at Amagertorv 6, Strøget - Copenhagen's main shopping street.
Mega cake
At Copenhagen's oldest patisserie, Conditori La Glace, further down Strøget in Skoubogade, they have also designed a unique Mega cake in honour of the birthday child.
The cake is made on an almond foundation with blueberry cream, lemon mousse and white chocolate, and of course decorated with the Blue Fluted Mega design.
