The National Historic Museum at Frederiksborg Castle, also called the Frederiksborg Museum is a cultural history museum based in Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerød.

Museum offers a chronological collection including portraits, historical paintings, furniture, art industry, highlighting the history of Denmark from Christianity's introduction to today.

The museum is a special department of the Carlsberg Foundation.

Encountered after a fire

The museum was actually created as a result of a tragedy. In 1859 Frederiksborg Castle burned down due to carelessness by lighting in a fireplace.

Castle Church and Audience Hall was fairly unscathed, but otherwise stood only sooty outer walls remain.

It was however quickly agreed that the palace should be restored. The funds were obtained through a nationwide collection as well as by contributions from the state and King Frederik 7.

Already in 1865 was the castle's outer rebuilt.

Inspired by Versailles

It had previously been suggested to remodel the palace for royal residence, but the government were not immediately willing to sacrifice money to the organization.

Carlsberg brewer J.C. Jacobsen suggested now that the castle was designed for a national historical museum inspired by the Versailles in Paris and other like that. Jacobsen also offered to pay for the arrangement of the palace.

The proposal was approved, and the museum was created in 1878. 1st February 1882 the first parts of the castle were open for the audience.
