Cisternerne -Museum of Modern Glass Art

  • Cisternerne Photo by Jonas Lodahl, Nicolas Tobias Følsgaard

Visit the Museum of Modern Glass Art in Copenhagen, located in the old water cisterns below ground, if you are looking for an experience out of the ordinary.

Two refined glass pyramids mark the entrance to the museum. Natural daylight cannot enter these former water cisterns where 16 million litres of drinking water used to flow.

The artificial illumination creates unique saturated colours in each of the 50 glass works, and the raw granite walls and humid air provide a strong contrast to the fragile glass.

A chilly experience

The glass paintings were executed by acclaimed artists such as Robert Jacobsen, Carl-Henning Pedersen, Per Kirkeby, Bjørn Nørgaard, Tróndur Patursson, Arne Haugen Sørensen and Peter Brandes.

The museum also has special exhibitions with well-known as well as unknown glass artists throughout the year.

Remember to bring a warm sweater! The tempeature never exceeds nine degrees centrigrade.
