ARKEN Museum of Modern Art

  • Arken

ARKEN Museum of Modern Art shows exhibitions with the greatest, Modernist artists alongside exhibitions of contemporary art - from new, young talents to household names. With a Copenhagen Card you will get free entrance at ARKEN.

ARKEN is situated 15 kilometres south of Copenhagen and opened in 1996 as part of a plan to boost the cultural image of the area south of Copenhagen.

Damien Hirst collection

In the fall of 2011 Arken received a generous donation from the Merla Art Foundation, which consisted of 8 Damien Hirst works.

Damien Hirst is one of the most notable artists on the contemporary art scene. The British artists has made quite a stir through the years with works consisting of dead butterflies, a shark and a diamond skull.

Distinctive architecture

ARKEN is designed by architect Søren Robert Lund and is situated in beautiful maritime surroundings, between the Marina of Ishøj and the long sandy beach - so you may also take a stroll around the area while you are there.

The building is an attraction in its own right. It resembles a ship, stranded only few metres from the sea. When you enter the building, a light and minimalistic art space adorned with modern and contemporary art is revealed.

The museum's café hangs from the side of the museum like a giant lifeboat, sporting a marvelous view of Køge Bay through the large panorama windows. The teak flooring planks are in the style of a ship's deck.

As a visitor at ARKEN you can borrow an audio guide and get more out of the art.
