Copenhagen - city of hope

Hopenhagen, handThe United Nations is behind a new campaign on the Internet, urging people across the world to become residents of the virtual city Hopenhagen, in order to influence the outcome of the COP15 climate conference in Copenhagen in December 2009.

Put pressure on politicians across the world prior to the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, COP15. When you sign up as a resident of the virtual city Hopenhagen, you send a signal to politicians that you want an effective global climate agreement.

That is the idea behind the campaign Hopenhagen, which has been developed by International Advertising Association in New York and supported by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

"Climate change is one of the epic challenges facing this and future generations," says UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and continues: "World leaders will come together for the Copenhagen climate change conference in December and every citizen of the world has a stake in the outcome."

Hopenhagen, lead the leadersA better future

The purpose of the campaign is for everybody to go to www.hopenhagen.org and join the movement, like a modern version of an old-fashioned petition.

"We need a global movement that mobilises real change," says Ban Ki-moon, who believes Hopenhagen is more than just a hope: "It is about global action for a global climate treaty and a better future for humankind."

The campaign runs prior to the climate conference in December 2009, when leaders of 192 countries gather in Copenhagen to sign a climate agreement to reduce the pollution that cause changes in climate.

Hopenhagen, save ourselvesReady to act

"Climate change is a universal challenge, and we believe the world's citizens are ready to act - they are just seeking the right platform," says Michael Lee, Director of International Advertising Association.

The intention is that the Hopenhagen website will be the platform, people can use to take action and participate in achieving a great and long lasting result at the climate summit. On the website you can submit what gives you hope.

The name of the campaign is composed of the words hope and Copenhagen and does not have any funding assigned to it yet. The people behind are therefore applying for funding from businesses and organisations, so that the message can be spread to as many as possible.
