Midsummer's Eve

  • Sankt Hans på Amager Strand Photo by Flickr, cyf

Bring the family and enjoy a lovely Danish Summer night by the bonfire as Midsummer Night unfolds. You will find several locations in Copenhagen where the evening is celebrated.

Midsummer night or Saint Hans' Evening as June 23 is called in Danish, is an old tradition. On this evening people gather across the country at bonfires to sing, listen to speeches, and not least to send the witches off to Bloksbjerg in Germany. Traditionally there will be placed a wooden figure on the fire resembling a witch.

Saint Hans is the Danish name for John the Baptist who was allegedly born on June 24. In Denmark he is celebrated on the evening before, just like we celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve the 24th instead of on Christmas Day.

Places to celebrate:

Tivoli
At the old amusement park in the middle of Copenhagen you can listen to musik performed by several choirs, sing a long yourself and of course enjoy the bonfire. It all starts at 21.30, and it's free for guests at Tivoli.

Frederiksberg Garden
